The Great Pardubice Steeplechase: Celebrating 150 Years of Czech Tradition and Excellence

The 135th edition of the Great Pardubice Steeplechase (Velká pardubická), one of Europe’s oldest and most respected horse races, took place this afternoon in Pardubice. Known for its thrilling challenges and deep-rooted history, the event stands as a proud symbol of Czech sporting heritage and endurance.

A Historic Legacy

Since its first run in 1874, the Great Pardubice Steeplechase has been held every October, becoming a cherished national tradition. The 6,900-meter course features 31 obstacles, including the famous Taxis Ditch, and remains a true test of courage, agility, and teamwork between horse and rider.

The race’s origins lie in the 19th-century noble hunting traditions of Pardubice, where horsemen navigated fences, fields, and streams. Over time, it evolved into the modern steeplechase, blending sport, culture, and community spirit.

Legends and Milestones

The race has produced many inspiring figures. Josef Váňa, a legendary rider and trainer, holds an unmatched record of eight victories as a jockey and nine as a trainer, often with the remarkable horse Železník.
Another unforgettable moment came in 1937, when Countess Lata Brandisová became the first—and so far, only—woman to win the Great Pardubice Steeplechase, riding her mare Norma. Her victory remains a defining moment in Czech sporting history.

A Modern Celebration of Skill and Spirit

Each year, the event draws top riders and horses from around the world. The 2025 lineup includes sixteen competitors, with international participation adding to the excitement. Among them are Ireland’s Stumptown, trained by Gavin Cromwell and ridden by Keith Donoghue, and the Czech favorite Sexy Lord, returning to defend its title.

The race day begins with a ceremonial opening featuring Kladruber horse-drawn carriages and the Czech national anthem, honoring the event’s historical and cultural significance. Fans can experience the action live in Pardubice or through national broadcasts and online streams.

A Celebration Beyond Sport

More than a competition, the Great Pardubice Steeplechase embodies national pride, perseverance, and tradition. Its enduring popularity reflects the Czech Republic’s passion for equestrian sport and its commitment to preserving one of Europe’s most unique and celebrated racing events.

For over 150 years, this remarkable race has united generations, celebrating not just victory, but also courage, community, and the timeless connection between humans and horses.
