New museums and exhibitions
Several exciting cultural spaces have opened or relaunched this December:
The Museum of Prague has reopened with a modern upgrade. Highlights include an immersive exhibition based on Langweil’s 19th-century Prague model, a large projection hall, interactive displays, and an AI-powered multilingual guide. Admission is free during the first months.
At the Old Town Hall, a new interactive exhibit lets visitors explore the inner workings of the Astronomical Clock. A digital touch panel allows users to rotate and examine original components, including parts from before the 1865 repair.
Signal Space, Prague’s first digital art gallery, has opened this year with family-friendly digital installations.
The Museum of Agriculture has launched the Photosynthesis Interactive Exhibit, while the National Technical Museum is celebrating 30 years of Škoda Auto with a special anniversary exhibition.
The National Museum will remain open during the holidays on December 25, 26, and 31, but will be closed on December 24 and New Year’s Day. The National Gallery is open on Boxing Day and New Year’s Eve.
Holiday events and festive activities
Prague stays lively even on Christmas Eve. Many monuments, museums, and gardens remain open, often with discounted entry.
The Prague Zoo opens at 9 a.m. on Christmas Eve with special pricing:
Adults pay CZK 100, and children under 15 pay just one crown. Visitors can bring suitable food for animals, such as carrots, apples, or unsweetened dry pastries. Animal pavilions close at 2 p.m., while the grounds stay open until 4 p.m.
Christmas markets and attractions
Christmas markets at Old Town Square and Wenceslas Square operate from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Christmas Eve.
Other holiday openings include:
Kampa Museum (10 a.m. – 3 p.m.)
Public Transport Museum (9 a.m. – 2 p.m.)
Prague Castle is closed on December 24 but reopens the next day. The castle grounds usually remain open for walks from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m.
Family-friendly traditions and sports
Families can enjoy the annual Nativity Scene Night, featuring detailed nativity displays across the country. Břevnov Monastery is hosting a free nativity exhibition until January 4.
From December 25 to 31, Prague hosts Free Sports Week, offering free access to selected sports facilities. Public ice rinks are also open, giving families the chance to enjoy outdoor skating during the holidays.
More ideas for families
Prague offers plenty more options, from budget-friendly museums and winter walks to ice skating, castle visits, and festive food spots. Families can mix culture, outdoor fun, and seasonal traditions to keep kids entertained throughout the school break.
