Prague Welcomes Fewer Tourists but Bigger Spenders: Luxury Travel Boosts City’s Economy

Prague’s Strategy Against Overtourism Shows Results

Prague is celebrating success in its long-term fight against overtourism. According to data released by city officials, the Czech capital welcomed 6.03 million visitors during the first three quarters of 2025 — a modest 2% year-on-year increase.

However, the city reports a major shift in visitor behavior: spending on luxury services, fine dining, and high-end experiences has increased significantly, signaling the rise of a more affluent traveler profile.

Deputy Mayor Jiří Pospíšil, responsible for culture and tourism, stated:

“A higher number of tourists is not a priority for Prague. The goal is to ensure we do not overburden the historic monument reserve and to show visitors other beautiful places in the capital.”

He added that the quality of services and spending per visitor have risen hand-in-hand, easing the strain on Prague’s historic core.

Protecting Heritage While Boosting Revenue

This new tourism model helps protect UNESCO heritage sites while maintaining stable municipal income — a strategy that other European cities facing overtourism are closely watching.

The next challenge for the city, however, is to disperse visitors beyond Old Town Square by promoting lesser-known neighborhoods and attractions. This approach aims to sustain tourism growth without overwhelming central Prague.

Rise of Asian and Middle Eastern Markets

A notable trend in 2025 has been the surge in visitors from Asian markets, which grew by 12% year-on-year. The expansion of direct flight connections has fueled this increase, particularly from Israel and South Korea, both of which recorded approximately 133,000 visitors in the first nine months of the year.

Growth was also seen from Japan, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates, with travelers from these regions showing a strong preference for premium accommodations, cultural events, and fine dining.

A Sustainable Future for Tourism

Prague’s shift toward attracting fewer but higher-spending tourists marks a turning point in its tourism strategy. The focus on sustainability, cultural preservation, and premium experiences positions the Czech capital as a model for responsible tourism in Europe.
