Prague Trams Chart a New Course: Six Routes to Reshape the City Network from 2026
Prague is set to significantly expand its tram network over the coming years, introducing six new routes designed to improve connectivity and serve up to 150,000 passengers daily. City officials confirmed that the rollout will happen in phases, with the first changes expected to begin in March 2026 as part of Prague’s long-term mobility strategy.
Dvorecký Bridge: The Key Connector
A major milestone in the expansion is the opening of the Dvorecký Bridge, scheduled for spring 2026. The bridge will connect several new tram routes and will be accessible to trams, cyclists, and pedestrians. Construction is nearing completion, and tram tracks on Wenceslas Square have also reached important stages, according to Jan Šurovský, Technical Director of the Prague Public Transport Company.
First Phase: Initial Routes and Adjustments
The first phase will include adjustments to bus services around the Pankrác Plain. The initial new tram route will run from Modřany through the Dvorecký Bridge to Dědina. Deputy Mayor for Transport Zdeněk Hřib described this route as the first step toward a larger tram loop planned for the city.
Other routes currently in advanced planning include:
Olšanská to Habrová near the Žižkov Freight Station
Malovanka to Strahov
Libuš to Nové Dvory
Construction timelines depend on procurement processes and final design approvals, with some projects expected to begin within the next one to two years.
Improving Citywide Connectivity
The expanded tram network aims to better connect key districts such as Vypich and Motol, Barrandov and Podolí, and Vršovice with central Wenceslas Square. Residents will gain direct tram access to major transport hubs including Masaryk Railway Station, Muzeum, and Národní Divadlo. Bus services will continue to support and complement the new tram routes.
Future Extensions and New District Access
Later phases will focus on serving new developments and previously underserved areas. Notable projects include:
The Jarov line, providing faster connections from Vackov and Třebešín to the city center
New links to Strahov, connecting northern districts to metro stations and major squares
The return of tram service to Malešice in spring 2028, restoring access after nearly 60 years
Timeline of Planned Tram Routes
Dvorecký Bridge (Spring 2026): Impacts tram lines 20 and 21, plus four bus routes
Jarov (Spring 2027): Extension of line 5 through Žižkov to the city center
Wenceslas Square (Summer 2027): Lines 6, 14, 29, and later 13
Strahov (End of 2027): New lines 28 and 29 from the city center
Malešice (Spring 2028): Extension of lines 15 and 16
Nové Dvory (Spring 2028): Extension of line 17 with future Metro D integration
Long-Term Vision
Beyond 2030, Prague plans a northern tram loop involving bridges and tunnels over the Vltava River, with completion expected around 2034–2035. City authorities are coordinating closely with designers and contractors to ensure smooth delivery and technical readiness.
A Step Toward Sustainable Mobility
The tram expansion supports Prague’s broader goals of reducing traffic congestion, promoting sustainable transport, and improving access between residential and commercial zones. Officials confirmed that detailed schedules and final route updates will be announced ahead of the first launch, with temporary adjustments expected during early operation phases.
More detailed information and official updates will be available through Prague Integrated Transport in the coming months.
