Prague to Permanently Ban Shared E-Scooters from January 2026

Starting January 2026, shared electric scooters will be banned throughout Prague, following a final decision by the Prague City Council. The move concludes years of debate surrounding safety concerns and public space management.

Why the Ban?

The decision comes after numerous complaints from residents and local authorities, particularly in Prague’s historic center, where shared e-scooters were often left blocking sidewalks and pedestrian zones.
Officials cited:

  • Safety risks to pedestrians, especially in crowded areas

  • Reckless riding, mostly by tourists

  • Disorderly parking and obstruction of public pathways

Deputy Mayor Zdeněk Hřib, who introduced the proposal in June, said the change aims to bring “clear and enforceable rules” to Prague’s streets.

“We are finally introducing order to public spaces and ending the uncontrolled operation of shared e-scooters. In the city center, they were often used more as a tourist attraction than a transport option,” he explained.

What Will Replace Them
The new system will regulate shared transport through contracts between the Technical Road Administration (TSK) and approved bicycle and e-bike operators.
Only these vehicles will be permitted in designated parking zones, and TSK will remove any unauthorized scooters found in public areas.

Operators of approved bicycles and e-bikes will pay CZK 25 per vehicle per month for the use of public parking spaces.

Exceptions
  • The ban only applies to shared scooters.

  • Privately owned e-scooters will still be allowed.

Background and Local Impact

The ban builds on earlier restrictions, such as the Prague 1 district’s local prohibition of scooters on Nerudova Street due to safety issues.
Authorities argue that shared scooters have been used more for entertainment than commuting, frequently causing traffic violations and disrupting public order.

Public Opinion

A poll conducted by Expats.cz shows strong support for the measure:

  • 76% of respondents said scooters should be banned in the city center.

  • 12% said no.

  • 12% favored a citywide ban.

A total of 1,257 readers participated in the survey.

The new rule marks a significant shift in Prague’s approach to shared mobility. By focusing on bicycles and e-bikes, city officials hope to promote safer and more practical transport options while restoring order and accessibility to pedestrian spaces.
