Proposed temporary terminal at Prague Florenc bus station

Prague’s main intercity bus terminal at Florenc is set to undergo a major temporary transformation as part of the long-term redevelopment of the Florenc district. A newly selected architectural proposal will introduce a modular passenger hall designed to improve comfort and functionality for travelers while large-scale construction continues in the surrounding area over the next two decades.

The winning concept, chosen through an architectural competition, features a lightweight and partially demountable structure that can adapt to future urban planning needs. The temporary terminal is expected to operate for up to 20 years during the broader redevelopment process. According to developers, the design was praised for balancing practicality, sustainability, and architectural quality while respecting the nearby historic Negrelli Viaduct.

The project forms part of the wider Florenc 21 initiative, an ambitious urban development plan that aims to transform the brownfield area between Masaryk Railway Station, the Florenc bus terminal, and the Negrelli Viaduct into a modern mixed-use neighborhood. The redevelopment is expected to include residential buildings, offices, public spaces, cultural venues, and improved transport connections.

Prague-based studio Upstructure created the winning design using a modular steel framework that integrates passenger services and retail facilities. The layout and roof structure were designed around passenger movement and the unique geometry of the site. Sustainability also played a major role in the proposal, with the building designed so it can be disassembled or relocated if transport plans change in the future.

Florenc remains one of Prague’s busiest transport hubs for both domestic and international bus routes. Current facilities are widely considered outdated, and the temporary terminal is intended to improve passenger experience while maintaining uninterrupted operations during construction work. City officials and planners are also coordinating future rail developments in the area, including plans for better rail access to Václav Havel Airport Prague.

The wider redevelopment will also focus on revitalizing public areas beneath the Negrelli Viaduct through cultural, commercial, and community-oriented projects. Although the complete transformation of Florenc is expected to take many years, city planners believe the temporary terminal will help bridge current transportation needs with Prague’s long-term vision for a modern urban district.
