Prague’s First New Tram Model in 20 Years Enters Service

Seven modern Škoda 52T trams have officially begun operation in Prague as of November 3, 2025, marking the city’s first new tram model introduction in two decades.

The Prague Public Transit Company (DPP) has launched seven Škoda 52T trams on line 12 from Lehovec to Sídliště Barrandov. This rollout marks the beginning of a larger plan that will see 20 new trams operating in the city by the end of 2025. These new models are designed to improve comfort, accessibility, and efficiency for both residents and visitors.

Key Features of the Škoda 52T

Each tram offers a capacity of up to 243 passengers, including 70 seats. The design includes a fully low-floor layout for easy access, air-conditioning for comfort, LED lighting, and digital passenger information screens. The trams can reach a top speed of 70 kilometers per hour and are built to reduce noise during travel. At 32 meters long and 2.5 meters wide, they are designed to navigate Prague’s narrow streets and sharp curves. Five double doors allow faster boarding and exit.

Deployment and Schedule

According to DPP communications manager Daniel Šabík, the first seven 52T trams will make up roughly a third of the vehicles operating on line 12. By December, all 20 trams from the initial order will be in service. The Škoda 52T completed a trial operation in September, covering 20,000 kilometers as part of the Czech Railway Authority’s approval process. After successful certification, the trams received their operational licenses. Each vehicle costs around CZK 82.5 million before VAT.

Development and Collaboration

The project involved more than 230 suppliers, with 76 percent of them being Czech companies, highlighting strong local industry participation. DPP’s contract allows for up to 200 new trams in the coming years to gradually replace older vehicles and meet rising passenger demand. DPP’s Technical Director, Jan Šurovský, noted that the project has stayed on schedule without major technical issues, which he described as a significant success for the city’s transport infrastructure.

Modern Design and Expansion Plans

Prague’s Deputy Mayor for Transport, Zdeněk Hřib, remarked earlier that the city had waited 20 years for new trams. He emphasized that these modern Škoda 52T trams will enhance daily commuting while supporting Prague’s ongoing tram expansion program. Future projects include new lines to Malešice, Strahov, Nové Dvory, and Olšanská–Habrová.

Passengers are encouraged to try the new trams on line 12, where they will be seen most often. Over time, these vehicles will expand to additional routes, improving accessibility, comfort, and travel efficiency throughout Prague.
