Prague Named European Forest City 2025

Prague has been awarded the title of European Forest City for 2025, recognizing its long-term commitment to sustainability, forest management, and green urban development. The honor, presented by the European Forest Institute (EFI), highlights Prague’s continued efforts to promote environmental awareness and expand public green spaces.

A Return to Green Glory

This is not Prague’s first time receiving the title—the city was also recognized in 2021. Mayor Bohuslav Svoboda accepted the award from EFI Director Robert Mavsar, emphasizing that the title reaffirms Prague’s dedication to sustainable urban planning and environmental protection.

“Receiving the title of European Forest City for 2025 is a great honor and a confirmation of our long-term efforts for sustainable development, where greenery and landscape care play a crucial role,” said Svoboda.

Green City Highlights

Prague ranks among Europe’s greenest capitals, with around 4,900 hectares of forests, making up 10 percent of its total area. Nearly 3,000 hectares are managed by Lesy hlavního města Prahy (Forests of the City of Prague). Popular parks such as Stromovka and Kinský Garden not only serve as urban retreats but also protect diverse ecosystems of flora and fauna, including many protected species.

Sustainability and Climate Resilience

Beyond recreation, Prague’s forests play a vital role in the city’s climate adaptation strategy. Its Climate Plan includes expanding green and forest areas to improve air quality, reduce heat, and enhance resilience against climate change.

EFI Director Robert Mavsar praised Prague’s proactive approach, noting that “Prague’s focus on urban forests and green infrastructure is a model for how cities can address climate change while improving citizens’ quality of life.”

Hosting the EFI Annual Conference

As part of this recognition, Prague will host the EFI Annual Conference from September 17–19, 2025, where experts will discuss challenges and solutions for sustainable forestry in Europe.
