MENDELU Scientists Develop Eco-Friendly Bio-Films to Replace Plastics in Agriculture

Scientists at Mendel University in Brno (MENDELU) are leading an innovative research project aimed at developing biodegradable bio-films that could one day replace conventional plastics used in agriculture. Conducted at the Faculty of AgriSciences, this groundbreaking work focuses on creating environmentally friendly materials that decompose naturally in soil within weeks or months — unlike traditional plastics that can persist for thousands of years.
The research team, led by Vedran Milosavljević and Radim Zelinka from the Space Agri Technologies research group, is developing bio-films made from polysaccharide components such as furcellaran (derived from seaweed) and chitosan (extracted from crustacean shells). These natural substances make the films both biodegradable and sustainable, while additional components provide strength, flexibility, and thermostability.
The production process is simple yet effective. The ingredients are mixed with water, poured onto boards, and left to dry naturally. Once ready, the bio-films can be enriched with essential nutrients like phosphorus and potassium, making them ideal for agricultural use. “We use the films to create baskets that protect seedlings. As they decompose, they release nutrients into the soil, supporting healthy plant growth,” explained Zelinka. Laboratory tests on lettuce and strawberries have already shown excellent results, and field experiments are now underway.
Beyond agriculture, the potential applications of MENDELU’s bio-films are vast. The material can be shaped into capsules, spheres, or composite systems suitable for packaging, pharmaceuticals, or even space research. According to Zelinka, “Our goal is to offer an ecological alternative to conventional plastics and minimize the environmental burden.”
This pioneering project is supported by the Technology Agency of the Czech Republic (TAČR) under the SIGMA program – Support for Early-Career Researchers (DC2). It marks the first project of its kind funded at Mendel University in Brno, reinforcing MENDELU’s commitment to sustainability, innovation, and global environmental responsibility.
Mendel University in Brno continues to stand at the forefront of scientific progress, combining modern research with ecological awareness to shape a more sustainable future.
