Food EU may restrict meat names for vegan products
ahoy

European lawmakers are currently discussing a proposal that could bring changes to how plant-based food products are labeled across the European Union. The idea is to reserve traditional meat-related names—such as “burger,” “sausage,” “steak,” “schnitzel,” and “fillet”—for products made from animal meat. If approved, plant-based alternatives may be encouraged to use distinct names that highlight their unique ingredients and characteristics.
Supporters of the proposal say it would help ensure clear labeling and transparency, allowing consumers to easily distinguish between animal-based and plant-based products. They also believe it could encourage innovation in the plant-based sector, as companies develop new and creative names that reflect their products’ originality.
On the other hand, some plant-based food producers and advocates suggest that current labels are already clear enough and that terms like “vegan burger” or “plant-based sausage” help consumers understand what to expect. They emphasize that both traditional and plant-based products can coexist in the market, offering people more choice based on their lifestyle and dietary preferences.
The topic has gained attention in the Czech Republic, where interest in plant-based diets continues to grow. According to a 2022 Ipsos survey, 39% of Czechs said they are trying to reduce their consumption of animal products, while around 10% either avoid meat entirely or eat it only occasionally. This trend has encouraged restaurants and supermarkets across the country to introduce a wider range of vegan and vegetarian options.
Although the legislation has not yet been finalized, it reflects the EU’s ongoing efforts to modernize food labeling standards while responding to evolving consumer habits. Whether traditional or plant-based, the goal remains the same—to ensure consumers have clear, informed, and diverse choices on their plates.
