Czechia braces for heavy snowfall as 2026 approaches
Czechia is set to experience full winter conditions around the New Year, with meteorologists warning of heavy snowfall, strong winds, and freezing temperatures across much of the country. Snowdrifts are expected, especially in mountainous areas, while Prague will also see snow showers on Dec. 31.
Weather outlook
According to the Czech Hydrometeorological Institute (ČHMÚ), daytime temperatures in the coming days will hover just above freezing, while nighttime temperatures will drop well below zero. Snowfall is expected to be most intense in the northwest of the country.
Prague forecast
The capital is expected to see several hours of snow showers on New Year’s Eve. Morning temperatures in Prague could fall to around -4°C, adding to wintry conditions for year-end celebrations.
New Year’s Eve warning
ČHMÚ meteorologists have highlighted New Year’s Eve as a particularly challenging weather day. Strong winds are expected, especially in mountainous regions, where snowdrifts and snow ridges are likely to form. Authorities have advised the public to remain cautious.
Snow accumulation and wind
Meteorologists predict that up to 10 centimeters of new snow could fall in lower-lying areas, while some mountain regions may receive as much as 20 centimeters. Wind speeds in the mountains could reach up to 70 km/h, worsening visibility and travel conditions.
Extended forecast
Weather conditions are expected to remain largely unchanged during the first week of 2026. Below-average temperatures, regular snow showers, and the possibility of all-day frosts are forecast even in lower elevations. Milder weather is not expected until around Jan. 10.
Midweek conditions
Clearer skies are forecast for Thursday morning, followed by increasing cloud cover from the northwest and additional snowfall during the day. Nighttime temperatures could drop to -10°C in many areas and as low as -13°C in regions with less cloud cover and lighter winds.
Expert insights
ČHMÚ meteorologist Josef Hanzlík told CNN Prima NEWS that precipitation at the turn of the year will spread from the northwest and fall entirely as snow or snow showers.
Additional snowfall projections
The Meteo Early Warning project expects the main wave of snowfall to begin Tuesday, with accumulations ranging from 3 to 18 centimeters in lower elevations and up to 40 centimeters in northern mountain regions through Friday. The Ventusky weather project also predicts persistent snowfall, with more than 10 centimeters possible in some non-mountainous areas by the end of next week.
