Czech Police Increase Security as Prague Christmas Markets Open

Czech police are adding more armed officers and patrols across the country as the Christmas season begins. They say there is no specific threat, but the extra security is meant to keep people safe as large crowds gather at markets and events.

Focus on Busy Areas

Police will watch “soft targets” like shopping areas, cultural venues, and sports centers—places that attract many people but don’t have permanent security.

More Patrols at Prague’s Main Markets

Prague’s Christmas markets, especially at Old Town Square and Wenceslas Square, will have a stronger police presence.
Over 100 stalls will open at Old Town Square, and officers will patrol daily from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Extra rules will be in place on New Year’s Eve to manage crowds.

Christmas Tree Lighting

The famous 22-meter tree at Old Town Square will be lit this Saturday. Singer Ewa Farna will perform. The exact time of the lighting is not announced to prevent crowds from gathering too early.
Daily light shows will run every hour from 4:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.

Authorities suggest using metro stations Náměstí Republiky or Můstek because Staroměstská has limited escalator access.

Advent at Prague Castle

Prague Castle is holding a special Advent open day with decorated halls, workshops, music, and access to spaces normally closed to the public. The program runs until January 4.
