Billa supermarket closes Czech e-shop: Shifts focus to store expansion
ahoy

Billa, one of Czechia’s major supermarket chains, will shut down its online grocery shop at the end of January 2026 after concluding that the platform was too costly to operate. The company said that high investments in technology, logistics, and staffing led to financial losses, with the e-shop contributing significantly to a nearly CZK 63 million loss in 2023. Instead, Billa will shift to courier partnerships with services like Wolt and Foodora, which will expand its delivery reach from 1.5 million to 2.5 million households. This move follows a wider trend among Czech retailers who are outsourcing online delivery rather than running their own platforms. At the same time, Billa will continue investing heavily in its physical stores, planning CZK 2.8 billion in upgrades and openings in 2026, including 15 new stores and renovations of 40 existing locations.
