Beer divides, DIY unites: Czechs attempt to define national character

The research was conducted as part of the Good Morning, Czechia (Dobré ráno, Česko) initiative, which aims to better define Czech identity in the 21st century and strengthen the country’s international image. The project is coordinated by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in cooperation with Czech Centres, CzechInvest, Czech Tourism, and other partners.

Early findings show strong pride in Czech inventiveness and resourcefulness. Respondents highlighted a practical, problem-solving mindset, often linked to DIY skills and the ability to cope in difficult situations. Sporting achievements, including iconic moments by footballer Antonín Panenka and Olympic runner Emil Zátopek, were cited as examples of national creativity and resilience.

Solidarity also emerged as a key value. Many participants pointed to collective efforts during natural disasters and charitable initiatives for vulnerable groups as defining moments of community spirit.

Daily life and access to nature featured prominently in responses. Activities such as hiking, camping, and canoeing were associated with freedom and quality of life, reflecting what some described as a close relationship between people, community, and the environment.

Beer culture, long considered a national symbol, drew more divided opinions. While respondents expressed pride in Czech brewing traditions and global recognition, many voiced concern about the country being reduced to an alcohol-tourism stereotype. Researchers noted that the growth of craft breweries and modern approaches to brewing may help reshape this image.

The survey also revealed areas of self-criticism, including low self-confidence and limited national ambition. Participants expressed a desire for the Czech Republic to play a stronger role internationally, while acknowledging challenges such as language barriers and historical perceptions.

The participatory research will continue through online surveys and public discussions. Organizers say the findings will inform future strategies to present the Czech Republic abroad as a confident, innovative, and socially responsible country.
