Living abroad often means missing the small but meaningful traditions of home, from the smell of a summer barbecue to familiar radio countdowns. For Australians and New Zealanders in Prague, the Czech, Australian and New Zealand Association (CANZA) is offering a chance to reconnect with those memories through its first official event of 2026, hosted at The Down Under.

The celebration brings together Australia Day and New Zealand’s Waitangi Day, falling perfectly between the two national holidays. The joint event reflects the long-standing friendship between Aussies and Kiwis, who have shared cultural ties and a playful rivalry for generations. The partnership feels natural, as both communities in Prague often socialize together and maintain strong connections despite being far from home.

CANZA, founded in 2005, began as a small, close-knit group of young expats excited by life abroad. Over the years, many members settled, started families, and eventually moved on, while new arrivals brought fresh energy. According to CANZA member Claire Dognini, the group’s focus today is on welcoming newcomers and expanding its activities beyond traditional events such as Australia Day, Waitangi Day, and Anzac Day.

Community involvement and charity are also central to CANZA’s mission. Last year, the association raised CZK 167,000 for a charity supporting young people transitioning out of children’s homes. This year’s celebration will again include a charity raffle, with hopes of raising even more funds for meaningful causes.

Although Prague’s Australian population is relatively small, estimated at around 550 to 600 residents, the community remains highly active. Cultural initiatives such as the Aussie & Kiwi Film Fest and popular spots like Wattle Cafe in Vinohrady help keep the spirit of home alive through food, film, and social gatherings.

The relationship between Czechia, Australia, and New Zealand runs deeper than many realize. One of the most famous symbols is the kangaroo mascot of Prague football club Bohemians 1905, adopted after a tour of Australia in 1927. More recently, ties were strengthened through joint fundraising during the 2019–2020 Australian bushfires, when Prague Zoo alone raised over 22 million crowns for wildlife rescue.

The event at The Down Under begins at 6 p.m. and features drinks, live music, stand-up comedy, and DJ sets. Entry is free for CANZA members, and open to anyone with an interest in Australian and New Zealand culture. As Dognini explains, celebrating these national days abroad helps create a sense of belonging, turning distant traditions into new shared memories in a country many now call home.
