Prague’s historic Vyšehrad fortress has officially launched its 2026 season with new guided experiences, underground tours, cultural events, and medieval-inspired attractions, offering visitors a quieter yet deeply historic alternative to Prague Castle.

Perched on a rocky hill overlooking the Vltava River, Vyšehrad holds a special place in Czech history and mythology. According to legend, Princess Libuše foretold the rise of Prague from this very location. The fortress later became an important seat of the Přemyslid dynasty during the 10th century.

One of the major highlights for 2026 is the newly introduced “Royal Vyšehrad” guided route, which grants visitors access to several usually restricted areas. The tour includes the remains of the Basilica of St. Lawrence, a preserved Romanesque bridge, and underground spaces beneath the historic Powder Mill.

Visitors can also experience traditional blacksmithing demonstrations at the Gothic Špička Gate, where craftsmen forge metal works and mint commemorative coins inspired by Vyšehrad’s medieval heritage.

The fortress’ underground casemates remain among the site’s most popular attractions. The extensive Baroque tunnel network leads to Gorlice Hall, home to several original statues from Charles Bridge, many of which were replaced by replicas on the bridge itself. Seasonal candlelit tours titled “Mysterious Vyšehrad” are expected to attract strong interest throughout the summer.

Vyšehrad Cemetery continues to serve as a cultural landmark and final resting place for some of the Czech Republic’s most influential figures, including composers Antonín Dvořák and Bedřich Smetana, writer Karel Čapek, artist Alfons Mucha, and activist Milada Horáková.

The 2026 season will also feature several major public events. On June 23, the Prague Symphony Orchestra FOK will perform Dvořák’s Symphony No. 9 “From the New World” outdoors within the fortress grounds. Historical reenactments, fencing demonstrations, and Prague Museum Night activities are also scheduled throughout the season.

Food and refreshments are available throughout the complex, including the popular Hospůdka Na Hradbách beer garden and Café Citadela overlooking the river.

With expanded visitor access, cultural programming, and a renewed focus on its historical legacy, Vyšehrad is positioning itself as one of Prague’s must-visit destinations in 2026.
