Prague has selected a Danish architectural studio to redesign the piazzetta outside the Fairmont Golden Prague hotel, transforming it into a greener, pedestrian-friendly public square. The project aims to improve a key transit space linking Pařížská Street with the Vltava riverbank in the city’s historic center.

The winning design was submitted by Copenhagen-based Studio ADEPT, chosen through the international RaumScape architectural competition. The redesign focuses on calming traffic, increasing greenery, and improving accessibility while respecting Prague’s protected heritage surroundings.

City officials highlighted that the new square will serve residents, workers, and visitors alike, creating an open and welcoming space for daily use. At least 3,000 square meters of the site will remain publicly accessible, with a minimum of 600 square meters dedicated to green areas. Car traffic in the zone is expected to be significantly reduced.

The competition attracted nearly 200 studios from 42 countries, making it the largest architectural competition ever held in the Czech Republic. The initiative was launched by WIC Prague in cooperation with the City of Prague and the Prague 1 district.

The project draws inspiration from Prague’s architectural legacy, referencing Adolf Loos’ “Raumplan” concept of interconnected spatial design, reinterpreted here as an open urban landscape.

The redevelopment, estimated at CZK 150 million, will be fully funded by a private investor. Detailed planning will begin in the coming months, with construction timelines to be announced.

Officials believe the project will become a new benchmark for public spaces in central Prague, reconnecting the historic center with the Vltava river through an extended green corridor.

The square, officially named Miloš Forman Square in 2018, is expected to become a vibrant meeting and cultural point in the heart of the city.
